This is much more subjective than the 100 best restaurants, but I can't even find a THEME.... they say "You know a great bar when you're in it...If it's a dive, it's Christ-this-place-is-a-dive dive. If it's an Irish pub, it's not an "Irish" pub. If it's a cocktail lounge, it's got some Tanqueray Ten and a bottle of good rye somewhere. This site is about those places." Here are Esquire Magazine's 100 Best Bars: http://www.esquire.com/bestbars/

Ha! How can Vesuvio, the third best bar on the block where it stands, be the highest rated bar in California?

Houston doesn't have one bar on the list.

Pretty bad for a city this size.

A couple of points after having only scanned the list briefly:

1. Of all the bars in Dallas you pick the Inwood Lounge??? I mean...it's OK I guess, but there are so many better choices in every category. Why not just omit any from Dallas if you think so little of us.

2. Two bars in Utah make the list (where very few people drink) and only three in Texas do (where nearly everyone does)? Color me skeptical.

Yeah, that's a good observation about Texas vs Utah. All credibility in this list, which was thin to begin with, is lost now.

I thought everyone would get a kick out of that list....

This is my favorite line. It's DRIPPING with pretense. Can't you just see the guy writing it making air-quotes and smirking when he brags to his friends about his list?

I like these lists as a forum topic, though - they always elicit strong opinions and discourse.

What's your favorite bar in Dallas? I like Libertine on Greenville, for the good beer and the good and cheap food. The Meridian Room near Fair Park is is owned by the same people and has a similar feel. edit: The Sandpiper in my hometown of Laguna Beach made the list. Not bad - a true dive that smells like 30 years of spilled beer and is heavily populated by local drunks. A throwback to when Laguna wasn't so lame.

I think our next la meet-up needs to be there.

Wow. That's a hard one. I'd almost have to categorize them to make it make any sense. Also bars come and go so much and I have two kids so I'm not hanging out in them every night I may not be the best judge but here goes:

Best Old-Timer (around more than 20 years): Stan's Blue Note on Greenville
Best Restaurant Bar: Bob's Steak & Chop House on Inwood (original location...very testosterone intensive)
Best For Music: Cavern Club or perhaps Poor David's Pub (although I may have heard that this closed...not sure).
RIP/Gone But Not Forgotten (Favorite Bars that No Longer Exists): Strictly Taboo (formerly The Taboo Room) and The Velvet Elvis
Best Hotel Bar: Stoneleigh P or perhaps the Library Bar at the Melrose
Smoky Dives: Balcony Club (Lakewood)

Lots of others, including The Old Monk, The Barley House, etc.

There are lots of great bars in Dallas. Hard for me to believe that there are 7 bars in downtown LA and 14 in all of Greater LA that are better than anything Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston combined has to offer.

They missed some far superior bars in some cities I am familiar with. Pretty lame list IMO.
