What muscles does the push-up work?

I always hear that the push-up is about the best body weight exercise anyone can do, and I know it works chest and tris, but what else does it engage exactly? I mostly do body-weight exercises seeing as I travel a lot, don't always have access to a full gym, and want to have a routine I can do with minimal equipment.

Depends on your hand position and posture. Standard pushups target the chest and triceps mainly. To hit the triceps harder, do diamond pushups where you place your palms much closer together. To hit the delts, do pike pushups (hard) or tiger pushups (even harder). For ultimate bad-assness, do handstand pushups.

Chest and tri's... closer the grip, the more tri's you work. Also, a bit from your core from stabilizing the position.

Yes, burpees, or actually superburpees involving a push-up at the bottom and an explosive leap at the top.

Doing push-ups on their own will target the fagit muscles.
