Looks complicated - does it require a longish scarf
No, though I tried it first with a long (and wide: double folded) one. Someone posted a picture of the knot on the Dutch styleforum and my gf figured out how it worked. Here goes; hope people don't mind I post it here.
(Not much light, so the pictures are a bit blurry).
Step 1. Put the scarf on, like this:

Step 2. Pull the top one of the two ends of the scarf through the loop:

Step 3. Take the other (bottom) end...

Step 4. ... and pull it through under the other end:

Step 5. Put that end back through the loop, under the other end:
