Probably can't count him as active, but at least he aint dead (yet): Monte Hellman.

If it weren't for him, there'd be no Tarantino. Not only as an influence, but as a benefactor. Hellman got his exec producer credit but was really the guy that got the funding together for Reservoir Dogs. BTW, Sheriff #3, a.k.a. Tony Cosmo (not his real name) is Hellman's son. He happened to be visiting dad in LA when Tarantino was pitching the RD story to Monte and Quentin was using the "commode" scene as the pitch and in his manic way of telling said that he needed a few cops, looked at "Tony" and said, and him, he's one of them, and went on with the story/pitch.

here's a fairly good list imo from way back in 2003 but is still pretty relevant I think

it's 40 instead of 25 though and lynch haters will not like this list

21. Sofia Coppola

she is decent at best, were it not for her last name her films wouldn't be as popular or commercially succesful.

Woody Allen definitely belongs. I'd rank him even higher than Tokyo did.

Obviously I disagree. I don't recall many of her movies being that popular or commercially successful. Especially not due to her last name. They are, however, on the whole - fairly brilliant films. She belongs on my list more than most of the other people on EW's list. Marie Antoinette lost money. A lot of people don't like it. I'm not a huge fan, but I "get it" and it is a misunderstood work of art, at least. Lost In Translation made 44 million... but half of that was a huge late Oscar surge. It played in theaters in the US for SEVEN MONTHS. It is also an incredibly brilliant film from a directorial standpoint. Was it an accident? Maybe - but people give directors credit for things that are accidents all the time.

The Virgin Suicides barely broke even. Maybe Ms. Coppola should stop making movies with Kirsten Dunst. I'm just saying.

Do you think Nic Cage would be more successful if he went by Nicholas Coppola? Your name gets you in the door in Hollywood. It dosn't make people flock to see your movie when you direct it. How many Christopher Coppola movies have been hits?

Fuuma has good taste, I approve and agree.

As for EW's list, it's just as horrible as one would expect. Even if they dropped the pretense and just said that their list is of best active american directors, it'd still be dull as hell.

One of my favorite movies is a Roman Coppola movie.

Kieslowski is dead, no?

And you had to bring up Polanski, didn't you?

How can anyone not think of Polanski for this? He's one of my top 5 directors of all times (dead or alive)
