High-end retail salesmen do it. And since I'm better than a salesman, I can't do it. It's bad enough I have to associate with the hoi polloi every time I want to swipe my AMEX.

I'm going to commission a jacket with 20 functional buttons per sleeve, reaching all the way up to the elbow, and wear them all unbuttoned.

I like open buttonholes and I leave a button open when wearing a jacket casually, just because I can. I don't hang around with anyone who would know the significance of the open buttonhole enough to have an opinion on it or even notice it. It's a personal pleasure rather than a status symbol.
A styleforum member would be able to tell that your buttons functioned without you having to leave one undone.
Yeah, and to a normal person, having one button undone just looks like the decorative non-functioning button that was supposed to be there fell off.
