OK, maybe not always-- but sometimes, there are some rarefied gems just waiting out there on the 'bay. If you know your measurements, brands to look for, and what to look for in a "new" item, you can really make a killing. Skeptics, check out a few examples:
[I am not selling any of these items, nor bidding on any of them]
One gentleman got smart and snagged this for $1000. Unbelievable wool kiton suit, brand new-- sleeves still basted, and I think flat front trousers (unhemmed). I was checking into the measurements to see if I had a shot (not likely, it was a 40reg but figured it was worth checking into)

If you wear a size 44reg, all you need is your checkbook and a tailor who stocks quality suit buttons (you'll have to buy an entire new set for the jacket, but that's a small price to pay)-- and you'll have a great example of the elusive Perfect Navy Suit. I'd ask for photos of the underside of the lapel buttonhole and the jacket label inside, just to be 100% sure I knew what i was getting. This suit even has flat front trousers!

If I didn't already have an identical jacket by Brioni, I'd be all over this one-- for less than $500.

some incredible flat front trousers, some of the nicest I've seen in a while:

And finally, don't forget the $850 John Lobb shoes, which retail for about $1400

There are usually some great deals on TRUE new with tags Oxxford Clothes suits (which to me, means basted sleeves, double vented jacket, trousers unhemmed) but didn't see any at the moment.
Those who have never bought from Ebay before, be sure to see the thread on how to measure for online auctions, to be sure you get the right size-- but really, it isn't that hard.
