Why are they? These guys in their wacky jackets. If this stuff is mostly electronic, why do they physically need to be there?

They Arnt required unless it's a physical stock exchange like nyse. Some stocks on nyse only trade physically and not electronically. It's the super expensive ones though not the ones normal investors like you or me would have the capital to invest in.

We wouldn't have Trading Places without physical trading. Jaime Lee Curtis' breasts. Mmmmm.

I met a girl who worked for Huffington Post once. She was insanely hot.

Some girl who I worked with had an article written in the huffington post about her leaving finance industry to start a startup was also insanely hot. What a coincidence...such a small world.

They aren't truly needed (and their necessity has been diminishing), but it is still a place where you can make a lot of money by being physically larger and louder than your neighbors...

Seriously though, that's why all of them are former college athletes...you can make a lot of money by being good at fast mental arithmetic and being competitive and physically aggressive (since the brokers are most likely to take the orders they can best see and hear).

Of course, computers eliminate much of this, but as long as there are other people on the floor to trade with, there will still be people who do it.
