So how many colors is advisable, particularly if your employer's dress code calls for formal business attire?

I really think it depends on the occassion. For example, if it is a formal occassion, you should limit it to to 3. If it is not, I would say about 6. However, the more colors you do have, the harder it is too match, so you are setting yourself up for a harder time to get ready.

True. I never sweat. Never!

I also don't wear used shirts ... so I'd buy a new one.

Given the human eye can distinguish about 10 million different colors this should be your upper limit. Any more and you are wasting colours.

I understand OP's question. A bit silly I guess but he's talking about general tones (a multi-colored shirt still usually has a dominant color).

I'd say not to exceed 4 hues on an outfit color palette.

It's usually best to keep it simple. Gray suits, white shirt, red tie, black shoes is timeless for instance. Some people pride themselves on colorful outfits and still have very respectable outfits. So there really is no rule.

I own a watch with an orange band. I really like wearing it during the fall...

that means that any outfit I wear during the fall has AT LEAST 6 colors

1-Shoes/Belt
2-Watch
3-Pants
4-Shirt
5-Sweater
6-Tie/Jacket/Coat

Then you can add socks, a tie + a blazer...

There's simply no limit in my opinion... especially for a casual look.
