What's the appeal of tapered jeans?

I think part of the confusion with straight / taper leg is people dont really know what draws the line between the two. For instance if you take THE most classic jean 1947 501 or even 501's in general they are always referred to as straight leg yet there's a 1" inch difference between knee and hem. Apc new standard has a 1.5" difference between knee and hem yet it can be called straight or tapered. A true straight leg to me is straight sven which is the same measurement at knee and hem.

on the other hand what do you guys of bootcut jeans, im kinda tall with long legs so the "flare" is kinda obvious and i think it kinda makes my calves look too big relative to my thighs. should i abandon boot cut jeans and go for more of a straight leg fit?

YES.

No one should ever be caught dead wearing bootcut jeans.

Perhaps, but it depends more on your body type. I don't think skinny people will ever look bad in a slight taper.

Bootcut swallows your shoes and make you look fatter.

funny you mention this struggle,

the reason a lot of girls buy flared legged jeans is they think it makes them look less fat when it's obviously the contrary.

I am 5'11", 130lbs. I wear flared pants and they sure as hell do not make me look fat. I think bootcut/flare looks good on thin people when it is very fitted, and the rest of the look has to go with it.

I am not a fan of the Bootcut or the flare, but i think a well worn in par of RRDS looks amazing.
