At this very moment: Santana's SILENT WAY recording. Santana has had many struggles and evolution through the years (maturity, aging, etc.). He and his band were great from their first album through the Silent Way / Song of the Wind period.

Oops - - the Door's END OF THE NIGHT just started on my little compilation rotation. What a great year that was.

Been wanting to order this box for a while and an Amazon gift card facilitated that. Oscar, Herb, Ray and a drummer (I can't remember the name) do their first show together since the late 50s or something. It was recorded in the early '90s, only weeks before Oscar experienced the stroke that robbed his left hand of much of its magic. Sort of his legendary "last stand," and I can't wait to listen.

Holman was a great arranger - if you can find it, seek out a Gerry Mulligan album featuring Holman's charts - the band has an all saxophone front line of Mulligan on baritone, Lee Konitz on alto, Alan Eager on tenor and alto, Zoot Sims on tenor and alto and Al Cohn on tenor and baritone with a two-man rhythm section of Freddie Green on guitar and Dave Bailey on drums. Blue Note reissued it in the 1970s (along with some Mullican-Chet Baker tracks featuring Konitz) under the name "Revelation".

"Brilliant Corners" might be Monk's best studio album.
