What is the Name and Purpose of the Flaps in Armpits in Men's Jackets/Blazers

I recently purchased a new camel hair jacket that has flaps under the armpits like those illustrated in the attached photo. Can someone explain to me the purpose of the flaps.

It is known as a sweatshield and helps to protect the jacket.

It's a "sweat shield", a protective fabric piece in case your pits sweat profusely

Thanks. Its placement on my "heavier jackets" (like the camel hair) is ironic to me since I only seem to wear the jacket when its downright frigid as it is here today. I wouldn't mind having those on the lighter blend jackets I own, though.
