Home for the week-end: a bottle of Vouvray, then a bottle of Bergerac, paella (chicken, schrimps, mussels, twice as much saffron as supposed to) and artisanal cheeses.

twice in the past week had mixed roast meat platters (shared with 6-8 other people) at breweries in dusseldorf - roast goose, 3-4 different types of sausages, boiled pigs nuckel and roast pigs nuckel, ham and fat back bacon with beer. hmmmm

Drool!! Are the Christmas Markets open yet? I have fond memories of that sweet hot red wine and sausages in Dusseldorf. Lovely city.

Fried smelt? Interesting, given where you live. Where I grew up, they "run" every spring. We'd go out to the beach at midnight, start drinking, then about 3-4am they'd start to run into shore. You'd just go out with a five gallon plastic bucket, with holes poked in the bottom, and scoop them out. Very tasty little fish.

Do you see them often on the menus in SF?

Not too often, but they are a favorite, so I order them when I get the chance.

oh, yeah - the tradeshow I go to falls on dates that can be just before or just after the christmas markets open - this year they opened while I was there, last year they didn't open until after we left. lots of fun - wooden tools, sausages, hot wine, eggnog, buttered rum. its times like this that I think it would be fun to be christian - lots of tree ornements and nativity scense stuff.

Risotto with white truffle shavings followed by a filet of orata grilled with with virgin olive oil, fresh herbs, served over broccoli rabe, roasted potatoes, and a saffron reduction.

Not for dinner, but I just ate a simple salami sandwich with sweet-hot mustard and it was incredible. Talk about your small pleasures.

Finally made a simple supper at home after some time away. Calling it cooking would be a stretch, as it was mainly reheating store-bought stuff on hand (hey, I need to ease back into things): crispy risotto balls to start, and then spaghetti with arrabiata sauce and sausage.
