What clothes did you wear as a child?

Two memories come to mind: plum corduroy bell bottoms and a brown DB corduroy overcoat with wild furry trimming. My siblings and I wore these psychedelic clothes in the years we lived in Franco's Spain in the early 70's. Spain, with no Marshall Plan, was relatively isolated from American influence and the liberated youth movement in the rest of Europe. Boy, did we attract attention!

Really young I wore clothes from Northern Getaway. As I got older I started to wear stuff like DC, Quiksilver, Etnies, Birdhouse, and all kinds of other 'skate' clothes. That started in grade 8 or 9 I think and there was the 'stitches' (clothing store) era where I wore pants that were so baggy I could have probably gotten both my legs into one pant leg if I tried. I also had a pair of camo pants too, looking back I'm thinking WTF was I thinking then?

I don't remember a whole lot of what I wore, but growing up as a kid in the 90's, there were more nylon pants then I would want to admit to. A bright orange pair of zipoffs with an elastic drawcord waist is particularly memorable...

Up until 10-11years old, I was wearing anything my mom dressed me (mostly sporty stuff like adidas & asics). Then manga called Slam Dunk came out and all my friend started buying basketball shoes (like Jordan, Airforce 1, Airmax) and I bought converse weapon Bird model, wearing with little baggy chinos.

After that, I was into vintage clothing (mostly nice old American stuff), street clothing (bathing ape, goodenough, etc), and mixing up the above till 18-20years old.

When I was very young, Red Ball Jets, PF Flyers, and penny loafers. Blue blazer, madras jacket. At some point around the early 70's I got a safari jacket for my birthday. I wore that thing to death. I always cared about what I wore.

My schools had uniforms and required jackets in winter, which I absolutely abhorred. Also had ties, which made me have a healthy disdain for unnecessary aesthetics that served no practical function (white and maroon stripes, white and green stripes, maroon and yellow stripes, and navy ties -- at four different schools). Absolutely hated formal outfits since about middle school, especially considering we stayed in places that were rather warm and tropical.

So, come highschool/undergrad, I went through a phase of wearing jeans and heavy metal t-shirts with boots, and not caring a damn. There's even a rule in my undergrad college rulebook that was entirely the result of the way I dressed.

And after grad school and getting a job, I came to realize that maybe formals aren't that bad after all. And here I am, having come a full circle.

I went to a Catholic elementary school in the fifties and early sixties where we were required to wear charcoal gray trousers, a white shirt, and a necktie with school emblem on it. In the mid to late sixties I attended a Catholic High School where we were required to wear a shirt, tie, and dress slacks.

I purchase my own clothes from the time I was twelve with earnings from paper route, cutting lawns, waxing cars, and other odd jobs. When I was fifteen I went to work in a men's clothing store, and purchased preppy clothes during my high school years. I remember that ties were about $2.00, oxford cloth button down dress shirts were about $5.00, and wool trousers were about $8.00. A quality men's all wool suit could be purchased in 1967 for $59.00. All of these clothes were made in the USA as were 95% of all clothes sold in stores at that time.

I began college in the summer of 1969 (Woodstock era), and dressed like a total slob with long hair and a beard. After college I returned to my prep style and wore suits and ties daily, which I still do today.
