I'm about to invest in my first watch and thinking of going vintage. My price range is limited to $500.

Is it even worth looking into vintage, or should I just keep looking at Hamilton, Swiss Army, and Tissot?

It seems that constant maintenance is necessary for vintage watches. How often would a reliable watch need to be serviced and what is the cost?

depending on the vintage, you'll also want to consider whether it will be a "daily wear" watch. Although some of the old watches were built like tanks, keep in mind they can be 40-50+ years old and some aren't as "water tight" as new watches. I have a 40's IWC that I use as a daily wear but will take it off when I wash my hands or if I'm sweating a lot.

you can get a classically styled mechanical watch from seiko for <500$

it'll actually keep time

I have a 1960's Omega Constellation that I bought in about 2001. I spent about double your budget, but that is because it is 18k gold. The value of the watch has doubled since I bought it (results not typical). I have had it serviced once at a cost of about $300 by a certified Omega Service Center.

I wear the watch almost daily and it keeps magnificent time.

I have also had vintage watches that I have bought and can't keep running. That's part of the experience as well. If you buy a vintage watch, it should be because you love vintage watches, not because you're looking to get a bargain. Expect everything else to be upside.

Good luck.

^^ Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely not looking for a bargain. I just wanted to see if there was anything that I could afford within my budget, and to see whether I could afford to maintain a vintage watch.

Seeing as how this might be a risky venture, I think I'll just wait until I can afford the risk.

Although I already own a Seiko, I was just looking for something different. Like a lot of the other elitists on this forum, I just wanted something a bit different from everyone else.
