using steam to open pores

From what I understand, using steam on your face helps to open your pores. So what is the point of that? Should I clean my face or apply something to it after steaming it when the pores are open?

Helps clean, is good for your skin, makes shaving easier, feels good. Make sure you close your pores after by splashing cool water or using a cool towel.

Does this really work? I use to do this in middle school when I had the occasional acne problem and do not remember if it worked.
