travel shopping : school me on NYC and tokyo

headed down to NYC sometime in the next month or so... I haven't been for a few years and I don't really know the scene for good shops down there. I'd rather not tool around bloomingdales and other stores along those lines, so if anyone can let me know some good shops to grab some less prozaic clothes that'd be great.

likewise, Ill be in Tokyo in 2 months and I'm sure there's some seriously rad stuff to be had there... anyone know where though?

Atelier - great mens store on Crosby in Soho...they carry Cloak. Don't knock Bloomies too much, the Soho one carries a lot of younger, edgier designers...some stuff that the uptown flagship doesn't have, plus they have frequent sales. It's next door to Atelier, so you can stop in.

Bagutta - has anyone been here of late? I haven't been since they moved to their new location....

There's a new store that advertises on cabs...I think its called Via Bus Stop. I believe they are a chain from Japan.

i love shopping in Tokyo....there's really no point in picking out actual stores since you prolly would have a hard time finding them (and i cant remember what they were actually called)....

but i've had good finds in the Shinjuku district, you can find stores with a good range of prices from cheap to $$$

harajuku if you're into "youth culture" type wear

Shibuya has some great stores in the moderate $$ range (my friend has a great vintage store there called "Jack's Vintage&quot

and the obvious Aoyama, Ginza, etc districts where the top dollar stores are.

This place has been there for a little while. I've never been, in, but I think it's women's only, and it seems like it's just another Zara or Club Monaco.

I would stop by the Diesel Denim Gallery too, sometimes they have some awesome **** there.

This is not correct...Via Bus Stop is in no way, shape or form similar to the pedestrian chain stores you mentioned. They are an import from Japan, where they have several locations. It's defintely an upscale store catering to those who shop at stores like Kirna Zabete, Jeffrey, 7, etc. They sell Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan, Bernhard Wilhelm, Beradi, and lots of obscure (to the general U.S. market) brands. They don't have menswear now, but they will come this summer (for Fall 05/Winter 06.
