After everybody and their dog has been to Hoof Cafe, I finally went there this weekend. My cousin had the french toast and foie gras, and I was more inclined to try other stuff including their goat butter; which really was like a more fattier version of whipped butter. There was a lot of maple syrup on the french toast, so much so that apparently my cousin who has a sweet tooth and is weaned on Jack Astor's couldn't even finish it. There seems to be a concerted effort to have at least 2 or 3 entrees for vegetarians. Presentation was apparently so good that my cousin would take a picture of everything before eating. I almost thought we'd be asked if we're reviewers. We ate at the bar. Too hot today to actually try a cappucino so I just stuck with the cocktails. The caesar (or misspelled ceasar) is pretty spicy; actually so spicy I couldn't really finish it after the alcohol was downed. My cousin's mimosa was too warm. But it was an interesting place. Julia (Julie?) was very pleasant and charming. The photos of the place make it look a lot bigger - it's actually much smaller. They seem to do several seatings and after 3pm is probably best if you just want to pop in, grab some stuff and leave (brunch ends at 4pm). $49 + tip for two.
The morning was spent treating my parents to an Oliver Bonacini cafe in the suburbs. I went light (knowing I would eat at Hoof) and got the egg white omelette with veggies. A bit too much dressing on the spinach salad. They were willing to do a substitution for the eggs benedict scone with white bread and the soup that came with the chicken panini was pretty salty. Fellow who served us didn't crack a smile until 2/3 into the meal and stuff like tea packets were left sitting on the table the whole meal (!?). $58 + tip for three.
