I have a stressful work situation. This guy that I have worked with for many years who works in another department got promoted. His old job went up on the internal job posting site. He sent out an email to different folks at his new level encouraging them to forward the posting to anybody they think would be good for the role. My current boss' boss and my old boss's boss sent the posting to me and told me they recommended me. To be honest, I wasn't thinking of applying to it. It would be a promotion, but my skill set is a tad different. Feeling good and motivated by having people reach out to me over it I applied. Well, sure enough my good friend at work also got the same encouragement from the same people as I. Now, I am like, well ****, they are just telling everybody to apply to the damn thing. This sucks. The positive encouragement from my uppers had me feeling good and now I applied for a job I was originally ho-hum about. Welp, I have an interview Monday. This is the first interview I have no idea how to prepare for. The skill set is different, however my group does a lot of analytical work for them as kind of internal consultants, but there is a whole other side that I'm not too privy to. On one hand I don't care if I don't get the gig because I like my group, on the other it would be a roughly $30k raise. Do I call into this interview blasé, or do I stress out and try to "study"?
What's it going to hurt? Are you OK with regrets of not trying?

30k is a pretty weak upside for all the possible downside I'm sensing.

Booth, skill set aside, would you enjoy the new role? Skills and experience can be learned but taking something for the money is not a road to job satisfaction.

For example, I have had a few companies in town reach out to me for promotion type roles but I turned down even the offer to interview because what the company does is something that goes against my ethical code. In some instances, the total comp packages are 30-40% higher than what I make but I couldn't wake up and look at myself in the mirror if I worked there.

Booth, I wouldn't study hard and stress out, but you should be prepared. If you bomb the interview that won't look good. New skills can be learned, and I'm sure they know you don't have all the skills/experience for the team seeing they know what you do now.

30k is a pretty weak upside for all the possible downside I'm sensing.

I think you're out of touch with the StyFo common man where $30k is a nice raise. Where I work, a 10% raise for a promotion is standard, so a $30k raise would be substantial.

It's always a good learning experience, if nothing else. Questions you didn't see coming, things you wish you would have said.

Or, just go in wearing a tuxedo, and fart...

So, I do work with the group very often. I was already on two calls with the guy who would be hiring me this morning. I have known him for almost a decade so it some ways it is awkward, but there's always stuff in a job that you don't know about and that's the stuff I am a bit afraid of.

The job is different, in some ways easier, in some ways harder. It doesn't go against any ethical code. Furthermore if there's one thing you must know about teh Booth, is teh Booth can be bought!

Booth is an ultra baller. I'm assuming 30k is not even what he spends on clothes, shoes, and scent in a year.

Prep and go into the call as if you wanted it....would be my $.02.

Even if you don't get it, the person/people interviewing you could say....pB would be great in another role/promotion going fwd. If you just "wing it", they may say....wow....he didn't even try.

At the co I work for(a VERY large financial firm), the founder has been know for swapping executive roles. So if you are running operations, you may now run HR. Etc. It helps to develop people and positions them to be evaluated. Working/running different parts of the business also enables you to possibly be in the long term discussion for senior mgt!
