then use the lighter trick to make it not frayed.
come on guys, tricks I learned while playing ice hockey shouldn't translate this easily in a men's style forum.

Trick won't work with cotton...only with things that melt.

although you can usually buy aglets (that is what the thing on the end of the lace is called).
Or carefully roll a thin strip of heavy duty packing tape around it
Or put on a bit of heat-shrink tubing and shrink it.

The packing tape method has been working great on a pair of boots where the aglet pulled off one of the laces...you can barely tell which one isn't original--just got to get it really tight on the first wrap.

:( i have a few shirts at home that are frayed on the collar. is that a good application for this trick?

You give that a try and let us know how it works out.

He's not using these laces on his hiking boots he wants laces for his $700 Alden Shell Cordo balmoral boots.

Good point. The fact that pB wears high-quality boots has everything to do with Stitch having never heard of a quick fix that requires figuring out the complex concept that is "fire melts stuff."

Pissing me off...my co-worker, who is kinda my boss, is all butthurt because I asked him to remove an under-performer from a project I am managing. I have been through this many times and I know I am doing the guy a favour...he just isn't up to the task and no amount of mentoring or coaching is going to change that. But the co-worker wants to be all HR guy about it.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry spoke critical words about KISS in an interview, completely unprovoked. They should not have done that. Now I'm not going to buy their new record. Sorry if it sounds like I'm flying off the handle here, but I don't take kindly to that kind of nonsense.

It's shocking to me that there are grown men who have never heard of using a lighter (or other heat source) to repair frayed ends.

Yeah, I think my dad showed me that trick about 40 years ago. Of course we didn't have lighters back then and would have to rub two sticks together next to the frayed end, but kids these days and their throw away society.

5000 word paper to get done tonight...better start. ugh

What kind of undergraduate class are you taking that requires a 5000 word paper? That seems bizarre to me, honestly.

That's maybe 20 pages? As an undergrad, I had to write several in the 20-30 range. Most were upper level history classes, one for a literature class, and one for a senior capstone Econ class. (Right wing extremism in eastern Germany stemming from economic inequality during reunification, Nana Asma'u and Nigerian feminism, mental illness in artists in post Renaissance Amsterdam and Venice, Mersault and the Underground Man, and policy applications of behavioral economics).

So I'm going to guess he goes to a private liberal arts type university.

Now what kind of student waits until the last minute to write a paper that was clearly assigned at least a month previously and in all likelihood requires a great deal of research is a whole other question...the last week I get for something of that magnitude. Last day for like a 5-8 pager, yes. But there is no way that's getting done (reasonably) in 24 hours.

Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for an extension. Quite a few profs here, I think, so maybe you can pick their brain on the best way to go about getting that.
