Desperate Times = Desperate Measures

eBay have been pestering me to buy a time trinket, with the incentive coupon code offering a discount of "10% off lUxUrY Watches".

The catch? To qualify the item must have a *minimum* price of £2,000GBP

(Bubble go... pop)

Yes the market sucks, but to be fair, they've run this special at least a half dozen times over the last 4 years IIRC. Looking at my eBay history, I bought something in October of 2021 and something in November 2023 under one of these promos.

Will this qualify as a Heuer?

Only after you've acquired UMCM status, the most ridiculous 911, and earned a reputation here for being a delusional blowhard. But then, yes, you can tell all of us it's a Heuer... ;-)

My dad bought this PAM in the early 2000s, and it's still on the OG croc strap and runs totally fine despite never being serviced.

It was a worn a ton by him and my brother & I, so I'm surprised it still runs OK and the strap is in relatively good condition.

Grabbed a suede green strap to throw it on, but I guess it says a lot about deployants extending the life of a watch strap. I think I'm going to move all my nicer watches with good straps to deployants. I don't know what it is, but both the Lange's I've owned had their straps wear out super fast within ~6 - 12 months and I didn't do anything super crazy with them...

Maybe you have acidic sweat? Sounds wild to me. I've had cheap straps that don't wear like that.

I don't think so because I used to play a lot of guitar and the guitar bridges never wore much compared to other people. There are definitely people with super acidic sweat where the guitar brides would wear down fast & start to discolor, but never happened to me really.

And all of my other watches have been fine including some JLC leather.

Maybe because I was also wearing the two Langes almost daily? Could also be because I was living in Utah at the time...but it's super dry there and not humid, especially compared to Vancouver which is coastal & wet.

Thanks for the enlightenment - this is the first time I've ever been offered it.

As the qualifying minimum of £2,000GBP is 5X more than the most I've spent on a watch from there, I stand by my claim of their desperation in now extending it to the likes of me ;)

I have a colleague who wears his late father's similar era Panerai. I was shocked when he mentioned that it's on the original strap. Maybe they make an indestructible strap?

Could it simply be the size of the straps (width, thickness, etc…)? Like, perhaps at that size a threshold of durability is crossed in relation to the materials and construction?

I had a 16 year old Panerai. Original strap, never serviced. Strap was in great condition and watch kept time as well as a new watch.
