I picked up some ziplock bags of baseball cards just for fun. I spent $10, and got a decent number of mid 70s cards of hall of famers. My favorite was this one though, which is the oldest card I have. It’s from the 1955 Bowman set.

Here’s the update. I think I got all the Hall Of Famers, plus some I thought were cool. The Bruce Sutter card is his rookie card, which is cool though not all that pricey. I threw the Buckner card in the pic for any Red Sox fans…

I still haven't come up on an old horsehide jacket true thrift, but I recently learned that this 'vintage leather peacoat' i ethrifted a couple of years ago for $20 is in fact a WW2 era horsehide kriegsmarine (u-boat) jacket:
IMG_6708.jpeg

black wool lining, curly lamb collar, ~hip length, and the almost marbled wearing of the leather I'm only lately understanding is unique to horsehide.
IMG_6709.jpeg

no tags or labels except the center "3" size indicator, but German leather jackets of this era, military issue at least, have some very distinctive tailoring and design details.
IMG_6710.jpeg

fits well and is perfectly broken in and comfortable in the way only old leather outerwear can be, and indirectly lead to two more ethrifts last month. Iffy pictures and descriptions, bit of a gamble in both cases as people don't give away leather jackets, but <$100 shipped each and both exceeded my expectations.

Now this is a serious MFin piece of outerwear - I recognized some of the design DNA from my kriegs immediately, and that sort of mouton shearling is pretty distinctive even in poor lighting at a funky angle.

As far as I can deduce, this is a ~ww2 navy blue (!) horsehide officer's trenchcoat.
IMG_6707.jpeg

Mouton (possibly beaver?) collar and a full moleskin lining, with an unusual double buckle setup that helped me id.

there are few plain jane versions floating around the internet but none with quite so much sauce. this is the kind of thing Sir Elton John would wear if he was a Luftwaffe officer.
now, on the softer side-

a 30s (20s? 40s?) belted safari jacket by Monarch, a firm well known for their horsehide jackets. Can horsehide be suede, or vice versa? It seems like monarch worked in hh pretty exclusively in the early days.

just beautifully made. original listing pics were dark and indistinct but they had a clear shot of the label and interior details and I knew it was something special
IMG_6712.jpeg

shockingly good condition for a century old jacket, some exterior staining and pocket flaps are curling but zero actual damage, even the buttons are all there.
IMG_6714.jpeg

fits a slim, slightly short 38, so I have a suspicion this one might be traveling east in the not too distant future. Plenty of true thrift ish to post, stay tuned.

Posts like this help me better identify good leather jackets and coats from the wilsons…. Anyone else have tips on things to look for that signify quality leather coats?

All German WW2 era military issues were stenciled or marked in some way.
Sorry to burst the bubble but unless you find such a mark it's not KM or Luft.
It could be very faint somewhere on the lining or even on tbe lining inner pockets check carefully.

Can any button hoarders help with this one? It’s a beautiful jacket and the buttons help make it pop

And this is my favorite find this week. Lots of pieces sewn together for this effect. No taped seams or DWR, so no good for actual skiiing, but MiIT, tons of pockets, and over the top branding made it stand out.
