I really like the Marlow wingtips and I'm not usually a shortwings person. Having said that, there is no better all-around, more stylish shoe than the Alden 975 in color 8 IMO. Got nothing to do with being on an Alden forum, just a fact in my mind.

Amen

Personally, I think the Marlow is the best looking shell blucher around, with the 975 a tier below (not too far behind). The two are quite versatile, but the Marlow can probably be dressed up with suits a little more effectively. However, the 975 is by far the more comfortable shoe. If I know I will have a long day at work in a suit, I will reach for the 975 over the Marlow every time.

Having the Lindrick wouldn't really affect my decision between the two bluchers. As is the norm on this thread, I would recommend both!

I will express the opposite position. I think Marlow wingtips are excellent and preferable. I am not a long wing person at all. I know they represent classic American blucher - Alden styling, and they are definitely best in color #8. However, there is something about the lwb's appearance I find clunky and unattractive. I recognize this belief is blasphemous to many here. Alden makes decent shoes, but for me the proportions of lwbs are lacking. Alden's short wing blucher, or better yet, their proper wing tip oxford, looks better than the lwb to me. But I would still choose the Marlow design. Many of Alden's lasts are chunky when compared to more streamlined English shoe lasts.

Except Trickers and Grenson. Their shoes look amazing but their lasts seem chunkier than Alden's.

I wish the Marlow SW came in a lighter shade of shell. I may still score a pair.

If you can get the Marlows on sale, it's a no brainer. I'm an Alden fan with 20 plus pairs in my rotation, great boots but there are some better options when it comes to shoes, like the wingtip Marlow.

I'd like to hear some opinions on C&J's dark brown cordovan vs Aldens cigar.

How many of you guys out there have the wingtip Marlow, the penny loafer or the tassel loafer by C&J and have the same style in
by Alden in cigar?

I find the 975 more versatile for MY needs.
975 is a casual shoe which can be dressed up.
Marlow is a great formal shoe. It doesn't work with casual attire for me.

Marlow on sale through RL? How much discount typically ?

$850 is pretty steep (retail).

That is interesting, @MrDV. For you, what makes the 975 more suitable for casual wear over the Marlow? Color? Shape?
