Anybody ever have any problems wearing their Alden Indys (or any shoe with a steel shank) through an airport check point with the ramped up security?

In the US you have to remove your shoes at checkpoints at this time.

When I enter secure buildings the shoes will set off the metal detector and they will wand my shoes. No problem.

Try to exchange them. Definately don't ignore this. You could mess up your body (knee, hip, back) if you continued to wear a shoe like this.

While I do love Aldens, sometimes their QC can be problematic. My Kudu Hawaiian Stompers on one shoe make a clicking sound from the internal steel shank whenever I tilt my foot up. I don't know if that is normal though...

Thanks for all the replies. Just called J Crew and they offered to take them back. This was just the lady on the phone. I'll have to deal with the store manager in person to make it happen... Good thing I still have my receipt.

In the meantime, any other place people know of that carries the dark brown Chromexcel Indys? Shoemart and North River Outfitter (and J Crew) all seem to be out of size 10.

You should get your order in now then. They may not restock at The Shoe Mart for longer than 1 week and NRO is still shipping orders placed in December and January so it's going to be a wait there too.

Short answer: yes.

When I was flying through London Heathrow a couple of years ago, I asked if I should take off my 405s and send them through the X-ray machine. The security guy at the checkpoint said, "Only you crazy Americans do that." So, I tried to go through the metal detector wearing my 405s. After trying to go through a number of different times setting off the metal detector, the security guy told me to remove my boots and send them through the X-ray machine. After taking off the boots, I walked right through the metal detector without any more problems.

I picked up the black and tan version from Epaulet a couple of weeks ago. So far I really like them -- the leather is great (on par with my ultimate indys from LSH). I thought I'd share some pics:

BTW, Mike from Epaulet was great to work with! I initially ordered a size too small and he allowed me to exchange them for a larger size. He is very professional and he and his staff offer great customer service. I'd definitely recommend them. And, if you're looking for a pair of black indys, I'd highly recommend these as well.

You should be fine with a 9 1/2D

Thanks; I actually tried on a pair of reg Indys and the 9.5 was, indeed a perfect fit...
