Just the way the sport is. Yes training that young probably stunts most of their growth, but that only helps them. Much easier for a 5'1 girl to tumble than a 6'2 girl. Plus it just means they weigh less so their upper body strength goes a long ways.

but what happens when they are done with the sport, in particular the girls that get no national/world glory?

They lose the muscle and look somewhat normal. Also maybe grow a few inches to be normal height.

They stay small?

I guess that's my point. Is it right/healthy to stunt these girl's growth and take on these odd body shapes for a sport that won't keep them past their teenage years. It just seems that keeping these girls so small, when they are going through that growth period of 12-16, is not healthy for them long term and culturally, while not the end of the world, they seem very out of place physically, outside of the gym.

Guess the same could be said for a 295lb high school lineman. Being forced to gain weight for the sake of a basically meaningless sport. You really trying to make a case for ethics in (for the most part) voluntary sporting events?

you heard me. I really mean it more for beach volleyball.

Obviously you need to be in great shape to play at an olympic level but honestly, don't you think that if you take an athlete from one of the other teams (swimming/basketball/soccer etc) and give them a month of practice, they'll do as well as the volleyball "pros". You think one of those volleyball dudes could swim the 400 or score double digits in a BB game? Other than the spike/kill, which they jump high on and hit very hard, is there anything that they do that you couldn't do

I will just have to disagree with you and leave it at that.

These women look pretty well-adjusted to me:

good for them, they do look good.

No, I am simply backlashing against an olympic event in the "olympics backlash" thread. And in terms of ethics, not that I truly care either way, whether its voluntary or not should not have an bearing on it.

also, the female gymnasts....
why are they so small?

There is a standard and extremely effective therapy given to kinds with the signs of precocious purberty (onset of puberty before age 9) called luteinizing hormone-releasing analogs (LHRH.) Stops puberty in its tracks, basically. Im not saying this is in anyway widely used in gymnastics today, but I can hardly imaging the Eastern Europeans wouldn't have taken advantage of it during their heyday.

Question for people who actually watch gymnastics: do the medallists generally have any **** or no?
