Long-time lurker, first time poster here!

Apologies if this has slipped my radar somehow, but I am looking to get a white dinner jacket made for my wedding (late-afternoon to evening wedding in subtropical US, just so you don't start throwing bricks at me for not wearing a morning suit instead); ideally with a second jacket (in black / midnight blue) for other occasions.

I am currently based in Shanghai and have had a business suit made by WW Chan here in late 2013 that I was and am still very happy with.

However, given that Chan's SH quoted me approx. HKD13k for a Zegna-fabric based dinner suit with white dinner jacket here, and approx. HKD17k if I added the black jacket as well, I thought I should perhaps look at going to HK instead for a week and have the robes made there. Also, lots of people on here seem to believe that HK tailors offered better-quality workmanship than their SH-based counterparts, so given this will be for an important occasion, I don't want to take any chances...

Would you have any advice? From what I have read, it seems I should look at WW Chan HK, Ascot Chang, A-Man and Baroman, but I have not really seen much advice / feedback on their skills and prices when it comes to dinner suits / tuxedos.

My budget would be around HKD12-15k for both (one pair of trousers, if two won't fit the budget) and I could stay in HK for 1-2 weeks to be present for all fittings.

Would be grateful for any help!!

Someone I know has used them for work trousers and said he was pleased with what he got. I'm going round to his for dinner this weekend so I'll ask to see them.

I always see Lapel when I'm going up the escalator and from the look of the shop they compete on convenience, speed and price rather than outright quality.

I tried having a softer shouldered jacket made in HK. It was pretty terrible. A much wiser man than me said "Don't order Italian food in an Asian restaurant". But Yao or Chan will be more able to try this.

If your schedule is flexible and price is not a major concern, wait for one of the Napolitan specialists that visit The Armoury once every few months. Ring Jacket is the cheapest of the visiting tailors, Ciccio and Liverano are more or less European bespoke prices. I have two MTM suits from Ring Jacket that have quickly become my favorites especially because they're unlined and by far my most comfortable suits to wear during the summers here.

Or pop over to Seoul to see B& Tailor, who definitely do the Italian aesthetic far more justice than any Hong Kong tailor.

They have been coming to HK for trunk shows (think it's three in the last 8-9 months) and it will be interesting to see if they manage to sustain it.

Saw a couple of my friend's $4000 HKD suits from Lapel tailors. In 'Super 150s' wool - certainly not from a quality European mill or indeed anywhere you've heard of. Plain worsted. Fused construction, working buttonholes. Cut wasn't actually that bad - standard 2B SB with 2 vents - and the jacket fits my friend very well. Overall impression - a cheap suit which isn't going to fool anyone into thinking it is anything else, but not actually offensive to the eyes. Apparently small alterations after finishing were carried out without quibbling.

Also third-hand reports of people using Il Sarto and being quite pleased, FWIW.

So I've got my first bespoke suit from Gordon Yao. I think there might be some issues with the back and some of the stitching on the arms.

So after another 2 attempts to 'fix things' by GY, the jacket still seems to be having issues. There just always seems to be a new place 'wrong' after the previous issue was "fixed".

Really disappointed by the whole experience with Gordon, I had real high expectations of him as a craftsman who prides on his product but he just seems to be a shady salesman.

Unfortunately I'm not in Hong Kong anymore (as I went during the CNY period), so I could only send family to inspect it for me.

Can someone please help me out here as to what I should do? I'm really at a loss here. Latest photos below if anyone is interested.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You have to post fit pics - i.e. of you wearing the jacket - in order to get meaningful feedback.

@Genal - how many fittings did you have? Was there a tailor there during the fittings, aside from Gordon himself and that other short guy who is also front-of-house?

Perhaps GY has lost a sifu or two. Not that convinced by my recent suit from him, certainly not compared to expectations created in part by the price (relative to Hong Kong) and by reputation. Gordon did assure me that they "stood by their products" so I might go back soon and see if a nit or two can be attended to.

No there weren't any tailors there apart from Gordon (is he even a tailor?!) and the short guy.

He assured me of the same thing, and by the outcomes I've been getting after each "fix" it just seems to be a marketing tag line rather than being anything meaningful.

I think I'd be much happier if he re-made the whole suit, because quite frankly I think his just making it worse...

You are confusing things: You wrote
