Yes, the book was updated in 2002 as Dressing the Man: The Art of Permanent Fashion.

I have this book in front of me right now, and it there's nothing in it about "where" to shop.

Yeah, those are definitely two thematically different books.

Style and the Man is predominantly a listing and description of the better men's stores to visit in major world cities circa 1996.

An updated version would be great.

There is no updated version from Flusser. Steve Brinkman's 2002 book has a great guide to US stores, but it's not international.

Making the Man is the 1981 version of Clothes and the Man. Both of them read like obituaries now, for the most part.

this or ask andy or LL are prolly as good, if not better, than an updated list. there are numerous listings for virtually all goods in many places with many reviews, and it's searchable and continuously updated.

A great many of the stores are gone. Some of the descriptions of the offerings at the remaining stores are off. The prices are laughably out of date.

And you'll find a lot of omissions -- both stores from cities he covers that you think should be in there, and cities that he does not cover that you'll think should be in there. Most glaring omission: no Naples.

Sad but true. A lot of what is good will continue to get exponentially more expensive or simply disappear.

The descriptions in Making the Man, though, are an incredible time capsule. To read the description of the Paris Hildeetch & Key and then to see it now, with the gorgeous monogrammed cage elevator turned into a potted plant holder, the 25-year old Holliday & Brown madder ties no one will ever buy... it's a shock.
