one time i was at an E. Zegna boutique and there was this young lady who assisted me in the shoes section.
when i muttered some opinions regarding one particular shoe, she became very interested and sincerely admitted to me that she wanted to know more about the shoe basics. so i spent the next 20 minutes going over all the basics as much as i could: bals vs. bluchers, how to distinguish, soles types, dress shoe types, captoes, wingtips, etc. when to wear and in what colors, etc.
nothing regarding construction but just visual lesson. she was totally excited to have been armed with some new but useful and pertinent knowledge.

H&K Paris. The salesman chainsmoking and slagging off customers while they're still in the shop is a real damper.

Barneys. Salespeople either surly or ignorant, always crowded, always feels disorderly.

Went into Wilkes Bashford for the first time yesterday. I immediately asked a sales person for directions to the 'warehouse sale' area. This drew a derisive sneer from him and directions to the fifth floor.

The mens pants table looked like a K-Mart blue light display area after a tornado. My wife and I found a few pair to try on, so I went to the dressing room area, and she stayed behind to keep looking for more pants my size.

As I stood in line for a dressing room I overheard the sales clerk shrill loudly at my wife from halfway accross the room instructing her to examine the fabric from the front of the stack instead of flipping through them, implying that she had single-handedly messed up what would have otherwise been a neat display.

Being well versed in the art of oral self-defense she returned the derisive sneer, turned up the volume to match his, and explained to him that she was not examining fabric, but seeking out the correct size, which required that she turn them over and open the waistline.

She did not miss the chance to suggest to him that this was only necessary because he had not done his job in maintaing the display, and that he could perhaps make himself useful by helping her find the desired size instead of yelling at her accross the room. He turned beet-red and came over to assist, hating every minute of it.

It was pure joy to watch her, a 4'10," 95 lb. Hindu woman with a heavy accent, perform oral Ju-Jitsu on this snotty, rude sales clerk who no doubt spent years perfecting his haughty, arrogant persona.
