Hi everyone,

I am a 22yo undergraduate from Singapore. I recently got accepted to go on exchange to the University of Gothenburg for the Spring 2012 semester, starting in Jan 2012.

Being from Singapore, a country where we don't have the 4 seasons, I do not have a lot of clothing that I feel is suitable for the weather that I am likely to experience when I am there.

Thus, I would like to ask for the advice of SF-ers regarding what is a good packing list clothes wise.

Well, for the first month I would expect a lot of snow or a lot of rain in Gothenburg. Last 2 years there has been a lot of snow in Jan and Feb and even in March. But I don´t want to scare you, normally it just rains alot. For the University of Gothenburg, I would expect a very casual dress code. That´s how it was a couple of years ago, reckon it´s still the same. I don´t know what you will study but I didn´t see much people, if any, wearing a suit or even a tie there during the days. Most people just wear jeans and a shirt. But some more formal evening events might expect you wearing a suit so I would bring one (1).

Otherwise, some robust clothes. Wool socks. One or two pairs of long johns for Jan and Feb. Sturdy shoes with rubber soles. One pair formal shoes, black or dark brown, for fomral occassions to go with the suit. You will find good use for a Gore-tex jacket if you don´t mind wearing one. Besides that I would bring stuff I enjoy wearing no matter where I go.

Welcome to Gothenburg

Since Gothenburg is located by the sea it feels much colder than it actually is (due to wind chill and humidity). What you will need for the first months is a heavy winter coat, robust boots, warm cap and winter gloves. Long johns and a fleece jacket will also help.

After that you need a rain proof coat.

If you have a hard time finding some of these things in Singapore before you go, don’t worry because almost every shop in Gothenburg will have Christmas sale (-50%) when you arrive in January.

If I remember correctly, fellow SF-er from Singapore Gshen spent a year in Helsinki, Finland. Maybe he can give you some good advice on what to bring.
