In my mind, there is a big disconnect in this thread. Some seem to be focused on the "authenticity" of the denim. If you are going for a work wear fit, I get the desire for legit "sik fadez", but we are talking about wearing jeans with the a SC for a totally different look. I don't care if the denim doesn't have 200 years of loom production history, will last 10 years with me on my knees, etc. I want a pair that looks good and is comfortable for what I am wearing it for - with a SC, in a non blue collar work environment. I am more than happy to give up the selvedge for a proper rise (that covers ******) and rinse/color (irrespective of how it fades 6 months from now), and length. As much as I like @wigglr 's fits, that last one, the rise is just too low for that SC and I don't like the turned up cuffs. This isn't meant to bash anyone, just a comment.

DLDR - there are jeans for the work wear look and jeans for the SC and denim look, they don't have to cross over, often times they shouldn't serve both purposes, and I am at peace with my jeans that I wear wit SCs not having any street cred and not being "legit" denim.

I'm onboard with this. I have Japanese artisanal denim and the cut and fades are incongruent with a tailored sport coat or odd suit jacket (hey, it works for me). My personal SC preference is APC, because the denim is decent quality, the rivets are silver rather than bronze, and there's no adornments like pocket stitching. And the fit is nicely dialed in for slim to medium builds. (I wear Petit Standard, true to size, for those who know APC) If you wash them in cold occasionally rather than go for "fadez" they hold a nice dark indigo for a year or so.

I have found the seat on Levi's (including the CT) are too big for my non-existent arse. I have a pair from RPM West that I really like; I was sad to see them go out of business.

I'm interested to try Sid Mashburn's new offerings and am also intrigued by what I read by dieworkwear on Blackhorse Lane. Not sure if they would be a good choice for my seat issue, though.

The Mashburns look good -- slim straight should mean narrower top block. The gray or navy canvas versions could be a good sportcoat match too. I see Mashburn also sells APC denim.

Yeah APC is on the list to try. I saw those new canvas offerings and was interested, though not on the top of the list right now.

I have their garment dyed 501s in just about every color they offer (sage, grey, dark green, and stone). If they decided to garment dye their new denim offerings, I would be all over that.

Have you tried 511's? They are the best shaped jeans they make IMO. Slim taper, but not skinny. They look good with well fitted shirts and jackets.

I did once but the denim was stretchy and awful. Maybe they make them in heavier weight, better quality though. I might look again because a cool dude I just met here in the Nashville area was wearing some Levi's that didn't suck. Gives me hope haha.

@mossrockss I like the slim fit from Uniqlo. They may not have the rise you are looking for, but they are surprisingly nice. I think @dieworkwear wrote about them at some point as well. Price point is nice too.

DL-

I actually have a pair of Uniqlo selvedge jeans. I agree, the slim-straight is awesome save for the super low rise. I've been trying to break them in for 3 years when mowing the lawn, doing house work, etc. to get sick fades. They are uncooperative so far (and each time I cold wash them by hand, etc. etc.), the length shrinks about an inch lol.

Main thing that comes with higher-end jeans is that the denim ages a bit better. But that may not matter to CM guys who, I assume, are looking for dark jeans that look new or semi-new. Prob not going for those sick fades.

I like Uniqlo's jeans, but they are very slim fit. Might not suit more conservative tastes.

Feel like most guys here would prob like LVC's 1947 501s, LVC 1954 501s, Drake's jeans, Blackhorse Lane's N3, and Orslow 105 (although someone here wears Orslow's slimmer and more tapered 107, which I thought looked good with their jacket).

Heddels also has a jean finder, where you can find almost any fit. Although the models in their database are mostly raw and selvedge denim (which tends to be expensive).

http://scout.heddels.com/denim

Understood about the quality for sure (see above Uniqlo comment). And that Heddels thing is awesome. I'll poke around there to see what I can find.

I have a NWT Eidos charcoal knit tie I can sell you. It is wool or cashmere or a blend -- don't recall this moment. PM if you are interested.

Ooh I am intrigued. I might hit you up.

Try non-stretch 501 CT

what is "501 CT"? Does it require a trip to the doctor?

I've got a rust Exquisite Trimmings cashmere that's great- I haven't looked for a while but I assume they make them in other colours. If the Eidos doesn't work out try looking there.

THanks for the heads up!

The head designer at Levis, Jonathan Cheung, said that all of his designer friends throughout Europe in the big fashion houses wore Levis, but the first thing they did when they bought them was to take them to the tailor to have them tapered. So "CT" was their version of a Custom Tailored fit. The first batch that were made were cut and sewn by hand within the SF HQ Inspiration Lab specifically for the Levis x MR Porter launch. About a month later they were in the stores, but, as I mentioned previously, the fit was a disappointment. Too bad, great concept.

I agree, the stretch on 511s took a little bit of getting used to and I thought it was a gamble when I bought them. But I wouldn't be able to fit them with my thicker thighs and butt if they didn't stretch a little, so I took a chance and have grown to love them now. Yes, they are not the heaviest weight, but that suits me fine as I live in the Caribbean and I couldn't stand a super-heavyweight denim. I think they are plenty heavy though. I would check out the Dark Hollow color as that's the heaviest weight of all the washes I've bought, plus it's only 1% elastane so the least stretch. Rigid Dragon and Throttle are also very close, but just a tad lighter weight I would say.

The Made in the USA versions don't have stretch btw, 100% cotton. I just didn't love the washes as much.

@brillopad They have free shipping and free returns, so if you don't like them, you could always mail back free if done within 45 days.

The Levi's 501 CT are 501s but tapered.

They also have a lower rise than standard 501s so they look less Dad-like

I've recently bought two of the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket's to start working on this look casually. One in a darker grey and a khaki colored one. While the jackets are cut a little short, I think I prefer that for a casual dark denim outfit.
