I don't know if starting out with Japanese denim, or any other denim (like the LVC 501) that has to shrunk to size is a good starter pair of jeans, since there's a bit of a learning curve. I'd go with APC (size down two if you do, don't ask, just do it), Nudie, or Kicking Mule Workshop or Imperial as a starter pair of raw jeans. Rag and Bone's are also in your price range, but they take a little longer to get cool fades, so they might discourage you. If you're just looking for quality washed denim, I'd recommend Nudies, Earnest Sewn, or Diesel, or of course you could always buy raw jeans and if you don't feel like the hassle of being meticulous with your jeans, just wash them.

I'm a proud owner of 3-year-old APC English but I wouldn't recommend them anymore. It was a different world for denim 3 years ago. Now you have tons of Japanese denim available to try on, if you buy APC you will only end up buying something more expensive in 4 months, then never wearing the APC.
