Shortening ties

How do you shorten a tie? Assume a run of the mill lined tie, and no alteration to the thickness in the middle - just chopping off the small end. Is it just a matter of taking out the holding stitch a few inches from the end, unfolding a bit, chopping off and re-hemming? Or is there more to it?

No, forget shortening a tie. Chopping off the end will throw the proportions. It's too complicated to be worth it unless it's a priceless heirloom tie you insist on wearing.

IIRC, Tiecrafters shortens ties from the middle for around $20.

Even if it's just a few inches?

I've heard of Tiecrafters, but most of the *ties* aren't worth $20

I suppose I'll just have to pay more attention to length when buying.

I'm not sure that's true - if he can tie the tie to the right length and it looks fine except that the back blade hangs down a few inches, then there's no reason he couldn't chop those few inches off. It depends on the tie though - some taper farther from the end than others.

In any case, shortening from the end isn't that easy if you want it to look right - you'd have to do a bunch of work to get the lining right.

At certain bars, if you pass out, they'll just snip it.

Instant square end!

The cut part gets tacked above the bar as a trophy.
