As an established bespoke customer, and after some experience with pattern drafting myself, I have become much more sensitive about the sort of distortion and imbalance alterations cause to a pattern. With what I know now, I would never buy a RTW jacket which required shortening. It just sends the whole balance off.

Just don't do it, is my feeling these days. If it had to be done my new maximum limit would be 3/8" and no more. In the past, I have said up to 1/2" is OK, with 3/4" at a pinch. Now, I think zero to 3/8".
