Shoe Trees Too Big?

I wear Allen Edmonds 5-lasts in size 11.5 B (narrow). I use Nordstrom cedar shoe trees in size Large (as per both AE and Nordstrom size charts).

However, I’ve found that these shoe trees stretch out the leather in a strange way, almost deforming the shoe upper on the sides, where the shoe hole is. Is this normal? Are the shoe trees too big? How can I restore the shoes to their original shape?
