They are older, those all leather heels, re-inforced with lots of nails, were standard up to the 1950s or 60s.

Thereafter the leather heel, with a rubber corner has taken over as the standard for fine shoes.

I've been needing to take some pics of those, so I will see what I can do by the weekend.

Oh, and my favorites have to be those Santoni wholecuts from Brian. Wow.

I've had several pairs on the U, and while they are quite beautiful, they are a less than ideal fit for my wide feet so they saw little wear and got sold. I'm fond of the F last, but have not gotten around to ordering a pair yet (I'm not currently in great need of shoes as you can see

Andrew, I see, you got the boot trees from that strange woman in Reading who did not want to send abroad.

Bengal did a great job of explaining this. The seam on the Vass is handstitched, and the overall effect is altogether more rustic than the EG version.

Those are the trees and they are great!! A fellow forum member was exceedingly kind in forwarding them to me.

Same here, I don't like tassel loafers but love these. I've never seen another pair, I think they were a one-season order circa 01 or 02.

I love both styles, but due to my high arches/instep neither are a good fit for me. I've owned just about every style and make on the market in the past 7 years, and sold off everything that wasn't quite right or that just didn't see much wear. What you see in the pics is the stuff that works the best for me.

There was a bit of interest in the midnight blue Vass derby that was one of the pairs pictured in my February shoe damage thread...

Trying on Mr. Portnoy's crown for a day

...so as requested, here are some close-ups. I don't think I would wear these during the day...I am thinking of these for dinner and drinks at night....they're 3636, photographed with no flash in a combination of natural and flourescent light in my office:

Sorry, S., I do not have the shoes with me at the moment. But, the soles on a Vass 3636 are not architecturally remarkable...the instep can be beveled slightly (they are on mine), but there's no fiddling of the waist nor pitching of the sole into the heal. It is very mundane compared to Saint Crispin or G&G MTO, for example.

I just want to add two of my favourite pair of brown shoes. The first pair is a Crockett & Jones Handgrade (Modell: Weymouth) The second pair is a Crockett & Jones made for New & Lingwood.
