Shoe composition / finish - what is "varnished"?

My guess is corrected leather. Its sanded down to remove blemishes and then coated...probably what they're calling varnished. Its cheaper, usually unattractive after a few wears and I've never seen it on Santonis, which usually have pretty nice leather.
