Awesome!

I really like this show, which is strange because I was pretty disappointed at the beginning of the first season. I also like how they take the aspects of Caesar's death we are all already familiar with (and probably tired of hearing/seeing/reading) for granted, and focus on showing us something new, or from a different perspective. For example....Julius never said "Et tu Brute?", but the look on his face when he saw Brutus pick up the knife more than made up for that.

Also, they didn't show the speeches that Mark Antony and Brutus gave during his funeral either, but later alluded to them. Very cool.

I am excited to see Octavian develop into Augustus. I hope the actor they got to play the older Octavian is as good as Max!

In a way they did use the Et tu Brute line, and it was actually Marcus Brutus who said it to his mother, when she made a murderous comment about Marcus Antony being on the street surrounded by her thugs. "You too, mother", I believe was it.

I think Max Perkis has done a super job. The look he gives Servilia right at the end of season 1 was just dripping with venom. I love this show, and it's one of my favourites of HBO, who I believe sets the standard (yet to be even remotely met) by the rest of television.

Didn’t Suetonius say (um, write) that Caesar actually said “you too, my child?” in Greek to Brutus?

I completely agree that HBO sets the standard and no channel on TV comes even remotely (no pun intended) close to catching up.

I like Rome and Extras. I do think some shows on Showtime are just as good -- Dexter (my fave of all), Sleeper Cell, and Brotherhood.

Bach,

Did you like Weeds? I found it very entertaining. I can't access the showcase website because I live in Canada. What shows do you recommend I check out?

well yea but it's more the famous line from Shakespeare's Juilius Caesar that people quote; "Et tu, Brute?"

I liked the first episode of the new season too, although it seems like they are taking greater dramatic license this season and straying even further from actual history (i.e. Octavian wasn't even in Rome when Caesar was assassinated or when his will was read).

Still, it's probably my favorite HBO show ever. I am disappointed that this will be the last season, particularly since they are going to have to squeeze everything from the death of Caesar to the Battle of Actium (almost thirteen years) into one season.

I love Extras, but that is a BBC production that HBO smartly picked up... and I also really enjoy Deadwood, The Sopranos, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Sleeper Cell is entertaining, but it really isn't up to par with the other productions. The writing doesn't have the polish of these shows, but it is a one of a kind drama. Brotherhood is surprisingly good; I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I really do. I'm looking forward to the next season.

Does anyone know how much time they compressed into the first season? I seem to recall entire seasons/years passing between episodes. On the one hand, it is a shame that so much detail is lost; however, it is nice that the show takes some artistic license to cleverly summarize entire years or battles in order to keep the show full of quality content.

Violinist: I do like Weeds. Quirky humor. And, there is something about Mary Louise Parker that really attracts me. I think she has always projected a a certain level of smarts in her roles. Great smile. Like her eyes. Not hugely sexy like MB, but still sexy enough.

Violinist: You gotta check out Dexter. I think the first season is on DVD. A very original, creative series which must be a writer's dream because of all the possibilities.

I think Rome is rather vulgar, it's one sex-scene per episode generally.
ALTOUGH, I can't deny I'm stuck when I see it's on.
Is it just me that hate Octavianus (Augustus) actor, that hair destroys Augustus image as a cold-bloded-soldier...

I think the "vulgarity" is part of it. We have this romanticized concept of ancient Rome. It was more gaudy and real and modern than we think. Personally I think you'd have to be quite some prude to find the fairly conservative sex scenes one sees in Rome to be "vulgar", but I guess everyone is different.
