Recommend me some good horror films

Recently, I've been watching some horror flicks. Now I´m looking for more, but I just don't know which ones are worth watching if you bear in mind the following:

- no pure splatter/gore stuff like Braindead (things along the line of 28 Days Later are okay though)

- no torture stories like Hostel, Saw or the like, please

- atmospheric horror is preferred; it doesn't need to be overly bloody to be scary

Movies that I´ve seen and enjoyed:

- 28 Days Later (personal favourite)
- 30 Days of Night (a close second)
- 28 Weeks Later
- Silent Hill
- the Alien movies
- Night of the Living Dead (the old black and white original is not too gruesome)

Can anyone recommend any more?

Might not be exactly what you want but The Innocents is my favourite atmospheric horror flick, actually the scare factor is marginal (to me), just voluptuous cinematography. At a very different level of culture (i.e. kitsch) I also like old Roger Corman films.

Have you tried Argento's films? Suspiria is a good place to start.

I second Suspiria, it's very atmospheric with a good musical score. Although it does contain what has been described as one of the most brutal murder scenes ever. It's not that bad in my opinion.

Decent is fantastic.

Dont know if your looking purely horror but the movie Moon is more of a drama/sci-fi. Its fantastic and gave me the chills

I like the cultish/funny stuff like Basketcase and Phantasm.

Let the Right One In (seconded from above, probably the best horror movie of the last twenty years)
Anything by Mario Bava (Black Sabbath, Black Sunday, The Whip and the Body)
Any of the German silents (Caligari, Hands of Orloc, Nosferatu, Golem )
Vampyr
The Black Cat (Ulmer's version)
any of the 50's Hammer Horror

A lot of the stuff dwyhajlo mentioned above is excellent but is going to be either too bloody or too out there judging by your tastes. Also a note about Black Christmas. It's a fantastic movie and one of the best horror films of the 70's but the first slasher film was Bava's inferior Twitch of the Death Nerve.
