I had a feeling that was what was going on.

There's nothing wrong with doing that, but it can be a cautionary tale. You are really better off buying lots of versatile pieces to begin with that can be easily combined in different ways, than buying a specific set of items each of which can only be one with each other.

The light blue shirt, however, is obviously a versatile and staple wardrobe piece.
