Real or Fake Zegna?

Here's an Ebay auction for an "AUTHENTIC" new Zegna Su Misura suit. This seller regularly has a dozen or so of these up at any given time. Anyone care to venture an opinion whether they are genuine Zegna-made or not? And if they are genuine, how to explain the steady stream of MTM Zegna's?

FYI : feedback on that seller from 9 Mar 2004:

Not a Zegna suit. That's deceptive. Just fabric by Zegna. Suit is OK though. Buyer (-trevor-) ( 24) Mar-09-04 19:41

The suits made by other tailors with Zegna fabric generally say "Tessuto Zegna", so I'm not sure if that is true. BTW, it looks surprisingly similar to a RTW Zegna suit that I have, but mine has double-pleated pants.

I have no opinion about the authenticity of that suit; but if you have doubts, I would ask the seller for a picture of the tag in the chest pocket. If it looks like a Zegna chest pocket tag (they're distinctive, and it would tell you what quality of fabric is being used, to boot), it's not a guarantee that it's genuine, but it would provide some evidence.

In any event, it's not at all uncommon for people who order MTM suits not to pick them up or for stores to screw up the order (wrong fabric, wrong details, etc.). The store is stuck with the garment unless they can unload them to someone.

Good advice.

Yes, but it seems that it would be odd even so to have such a supply of returned MTM suits, all in fairly standard, plain colors (they are usually blue, gray, black like the "tessuto zegnas" you tend to see on Ebay).

Looks like gillesmeyer won it. He paid just over $300. Did you ever learn whether the thing was legit?
