I'm thinking if this for my next dress watch. I currently have a SARB033 and want a light dial watch. The Macy's near me is going out of business so it's available for $690 right now (50% off). But that Seagull moonphase is enticing.

Why do you say this?

I'm currently looking at a Seiko Sea Urchin or an Orient Mako. Aesthetically I prefer the Orient.

I consider the Seiko to be more of a Honda Civic of watches. Solid, well designed and a time-trusted foundation.

Orient is certainly good, they have some aesthetically pleasing new designs as well, but might be more comparable to Hyundai (as a newcomer/slightly fashionable, but still with good foundation just not as proven)

Thats my $0.02 YMMV.

Seiko is a tremendously underrated manufacture in the west. Yes they make good, reliable watches at just about every price point. But they also invented the quartz watch, have a history of building mechanical watches that outperform COSC standards and have continued to innovate in completely new directions in an industry where you don't see a lot of genuine "newness." Their aesthetics tend to be a bit derivative and they write too much on their dials, but that's about all I can really fault them for.

Orient, well, they make very nice watches for their price point.

Agreed, and we are even excluding the GS which is in a category above all we are discussing.

So, Seiko>Orient.

So would you say the Grand Seiko is the "Acura" of watches?

Having owned both a SARB line Seiko (SARB035) and an Orient Star Standard-Date, I'd put the Orient Star above Seiko. Finish and accuracy of the Orient Star was a level higher than the Seiko. That Orient is one of the few watches I regret selling.

To be fair to Seiko, the Orient Star is more expensive.
