Do you think it would be OK to wear a pocket square in the breast pocket of a shirt, polo or button-up, or maybe with a casual jacket?

No. It would look rather awful, I should think. Only jackets and topcoats.

I remember William Powell wearing one in his dressing gown breast pocket in one of the Thin Man movies. Perhaps the first one. It definitely worked for him. Maybe you need to be hung over and breakfasting with Myrna Loy to pull it off.

That's a futurist suit, in case you were wondering. Much as I like some futurist art, I'd stay clear of their sartorial choices. Most pocket squares look pretty affected even in jacket breast pockets, anyway.

Conjuring up historical uses older than 50 years, like Thin Man, is a challenge in such a discussion as the pocket hanky was actually used as a hanky, not just fashion fobbery... so tucking it into the convenient pocket, like your bathrobe wasn't "eccentric".

I've tried small squares in waistcoats... didn't care for the result.
