Saw Dino Jr and Mike Watt over the weekend. I like both, but to tell the truth I was a little bored. New Dino album coming out this summer, I think. The last one was pretty good.

Having "been there" for a whole lot of this stuff, including early shows by rem, minutemen, meat puppets sonic youth, pixies and later pavement and lots of chapel stuff I can't imagine going to see any of these bands now. I did catch the pixies rehash and it was worse than I feared it would be. It's all about catching some fresh *********** bars...Hold Steady, New Pornographers, (these were a few years ago of course) but old is old. Unless the band is Sonic Youth and then it's actually been getting better over the years.

Love The Wagon

Always liked pavement, especially when they were trashing everyone for selling out.

There's always the valid argument that bands get stale or are in it solely for the money, or for whatever reason keep doing it without the original passion. Punk rock reunions seem to be the most depressing, mostly because so much of the culture is youth.

But some bands just never stopped touring, or manage to put out alright new stuff. At the show last weekend, Watt seemed to be having a blast; he was not mailing it in. I did think Lou Barlow, etc. seemed a little less into it even than last time I saw them, but (1) that's kind of their thing and (2) their last album was really pretty good--real loose and rocking, and not at all tired. Even Evan Dando put out a pretty good album a year or two back, backed by All/Descendents guys.

And Malkmus's new stuff is creative and not too Pavement-y, even if some of it is a little too prog for me.

But I fully admit I was not "there" for most of this stuff the first time around. I was buying Pavement albums and the whole sub pop catalog (TAD?!), but mostly because the kids who knew what was up told me to.

Friend of mine referred to college rock bands reuniting and touring as the hipster state fair circuit.

One of the best shows I've seen (back in, **** I don't know, it was post-college, like 1998 or something) was Polara, Archers of Loaf, and Hum. Archers of Loaf put on an awesome show, and it must've been only months before they broke up (I'm not going on any archival evidence, just my memory here). I really liked Hum a lot, too, but man, their fans sucked. They were seemingly all frat boys. I blame the song 'Stars' for that.

One college rock band that was just a little bit too old for me was the Replacements. I did see them my senior year in high school in 1991 for their 'All Shook Down' tour. The Connells opened, and I still argue that they may have been the loudest band of all time, although that might have been a function of my young ears. My other memory of that show was the fact that I was a little sad that they played 'Hootenanny' so well.

Velocity Girl was in their prime when I was in college, but I guess they don't really qualify as college rock.

Terror Twilight is underappreciated. Especially by hipstars.
