Paisley tie for a banking interview?

I've picked up a suit (navy with very thin, subtle multi-color pinstripes) and a pair of shirts (white and light blue) in preparation for the investment banking interviews I hope to have next semester...now I'm on to ties. Are paisley ties appropriate for conservative banking interviews, or should I just stick to solid/stripe/club red and navy ties?

It depends largely on the color of the tie though I think the most approriate would be a navy tie with a dot motif.

for some reason, when it comes to interviews i've always thought that the less patterning, the better. if you can pull off a really clean, understated yet strong impression without any loud colors or garish designs, then the interviewer will have a better chance of remembering you. you don't want to be that guy remembered for wearing that yellow tie with the red shirt.

If the individual pines are of the small, neat repeating type with lots of ground in between, I'd think it fine. If they are of the large, riotous sort that overlap, I'd save it for after the hire.

I would guess banking has about 5 Hermes (or imitation) ties for every repp.

I agree with easygoing....that is the most common tie I see in banking....for an interview go as conservative as possible....no paisley....stripe or solid......you don't want to come off as flashy.....trust me, individualism is not appreciated on wall street...lol

If you mean investment banking, this is what you are up against - I see about 700 resumes for every spot I fill. Of that 700, I interview 30, of that 30, I ask 3 or 4 back for a second round, of that 4 I take the best. Are you sure you want your tie to be part of that equation?

NYBuck - I'm not sure where you work but this seems vastly more selective thatn most i-banks on the street. You must not have many positions to fill in if you take 1 out of 700 candidates. My experience with most bulge brackets i-banks recruiting associates from b-school is closer to this:
100-120 resumes > 30 1st round interviews > 10-12 second rounds > 4-5 offers

No paisley. And to be honest, I'd think twice about the multicoloured pinstripe too.

There's a good rule of thumb for junior interviewees: Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself "Would I wear this to my mother's funeral?" If the answer is no, tone it down.

I always love questions like this regarding interview attire......it's an hour of your life that could have a big effect on the next two, three or more years of your life.....can't you just suck it up and wear a conservative tie??? Why take the chance?

That looks like a country tie to me - tweed jacket, double-soled brogues, the works. Just my 2c, but I couldn't see anyone on Wall Street wearing it to work. If you're going to go BB, just get the repp.
