I thought Gwendolyn Christie was an interesting choice for Lucifer that ended up working out better than I thought it would.

I was mildly optimistic about the gender swap and like Christie, but I thought she fell flat. She was neither terrifyingly menacing, nor beautiful (two specific descriptors given to Lucifer), and just came across as matronly. Her voice acting in the "game" was good, though, but it is hard to see how Dream left that encounter scared of Lucifer or worried about going back to face Lucifer (as he is at the beginning of Seasons of Mists)

The girl they cast as Death nailed it, but I wish they leaned into the goth look for her. Sandman’s Death is a goth icon and it really would only take some tweaks to her makeup and wardrobe.

I know that is a complaint some people have (and that Death should appear younger than Dream, though she is older). But that didn't bother me. The black tank top and the Ankh were enough for me, and the actress did Death's personality and relationship with Dream perfectly. This was a home run in my opinion.

I agree the first couple of episodes were slow, but the diner episode was well done.

The first story in the graphic novel series was never my favorite either. So I expected as much going into the show. The graphic novel hadn’t found its voice at that point.

People who never read the series are going to be in for a treat moving forward.

Gaiman has said as much himself. He had to set up the universe and find his voice, and it took him a book or two. The switch from Book 1 to 2 is pretty jarring (especially all the dream sequences that aren't obviously labeled as dreams), and the show actually told it really well.

The Jed stuff confused the hell out of me in the graphic novels. Makes sense on a re-read, but was not at all clear what was going on originally.

The slow burn is critical to that particular story. It wouldn’t have worked chopped down.

Yeah it wouldn't work without it being the only story. You need that buildup of tension. The slow build up of horror as you realize what's going on is pretty much is the entire story.

Either it works for you or it doesn't. I can see why people wouldn't like it.

Love the show overall, but I guess that's the difference between coming in cold, and being a diehard of the graphic novels.

It leans heavier into horror than any other story from Sandman. Not even close. I always expected the episode to be divisive for people unfamiliar with the source material.

I remember fast forwarding through the Breaking Bad episode with a fly in the shop. The diner episode was on par or slightly better.
