I don't have a tv in my dorm at school. Don't miss it much but I still watch tv shows via downloads.

I don't understand the anti-Internet people. You don't like that you can find out almost anything about anything in an instant? Nuts to mapquest, I'm going to use an atlas! I want to find a restaurant review. I knew I shouldn't have thrown away my stacks of newspapers! To the library I go, then, for microfiche. Wait, I remember something called Sagat's, or was it Zagat's? I wonder if there are any used decent bookstores in the area...

You're joking, right? Watching TV has got to be the least efficient way to obtain information of all the media. Too many stupid advertisements that waste your time, and too many stupid stories that you aren't interested in.

With a newspaper, you can get way more information in much less time. Plus, you can skip past the crap you don't care about and don't have to waste time watching advertising.

TV news is truly terrible, with the possible exception of the News Hour on PBS.

but really, why is it that people are so proud of depriving themselves of such a HUGE source of information?

I mean, I don't read books or the newspaper but I wouldn't run around bragging about it. TV is here to entertain and inform. Heaven forbid we do something PURELY to entertain ourselves. I work too hard to subject myself to all that.

that and I work in TV advertising.

What information does one get from TV that can't easily be obtained elsewhere, and with greater variety?

I cancelled cable a few months ago and I really only miss the Travel Channel. The Internet is tough. One the one hand, I waste far more time on it than I'd ever waste on TV or videogames. On the other hand, I don't think I'd be nearly as well-rounded without it, simply due to the incredible breadth of ideas and information that I would likely never have been exposed to otherwise. Just as one example, I probably wouldn't even be aware of the existence of most of the books I've read over the past few years without the Internet. It's turning me into an idiot, but a cultured idiot.

Although I get a lot of information from TV, I never thought of it as an important source of information.

I think of TV as entertainment, and I would rather watch the shows on my TV screen rather than on a tiny computer.

My thoughts on TV are summed up by ATHF:

Frylock: "Yep, I thought it was about time we invested in a high-definition plasma set"
Meatwad: "But I thought you said TV was bad for us"
Frylock: "It is, but we fuckin' need it."
