Lawyers will never pick up enough slack to compensate for the financial sector. Plus, although it may not be true on this message board, lawyers in new york are terribly dressed. There are still plenty of people in finance who make enough money, and my guess is that Europeans and Brits will clear out the store given the relatively cheap U.S. prices and favorable exchange rate.

Why would the prices be relatively low if everything is imported? I would imagine it'd be the same price in Europe but converted into dollars. Does anyone know?

You are correct. Given that they are importing them at that crummy exchange rate, you wouldn't expect big savings vs. buying them locally.

I wonder if aportnoy has already arranged for a line of credit at this store?

I checked this out after work today....very nice store, has the potential to easily be the best men's shoe store in NYC. Location is a bit weird (next to Lucien Pellat-Finet); probably better rent than the Meat Packing district. It is definitely better than the shoe departments at BG, Barneys, and Saks (combined). They are still waiting for Corthay (this week), Aubercy and EG (both later this month). G&G is just awesome, the waists blow Lobb Prestige out of the water; price is around $1050. Artioli is very snouty/pointy; didn't pay too much attention to Weston and Church. Overall the selection is balanced and they have something for everyone. This is the place to do some shoe damage!

In New York, a vast majority does (especially for the brands they are focusing on).

I would have to leave midtown to shop there. Who knows what type of citified, sharp dressed and sartorially bred studs and their elite posses sporting the hottest of the hot diamond gals I might encounter.

Is it safe?

Luxury goods are still doing very well. There are those who not need to work for a living. Some do work anyway, but it's not for their living, it's for their amusement.

point taken, but not all goods cost the same (after currency conversion) in all markets. Also, don't forget about the VAT in Europe/UK that customers can easily avoid by buying in the US.
