I think there is something to that.

I did not watch any "late night" until I got a satellite and could watch the east coast feed at 9:30.

So it's partially motivated by lower production costs?

It's crazy how this dramatically changes their programming schedule and available blocks. I think this could end badly. NBC now has 1/3rd fewer opportunities to create new hits than ABC and CBS.

It's amazing to me that an hour-long prime time drama costs an average of $3 million per episode.

This explains why a season now consists of so many fewer episodes than they used to.

This was brought home to me recently when I purchased the DVD box-set of Season 1 of Route 66. It's an 8 disc set consisting of 30, one-hour episodes produced in 1960-61 (and they were all shot on location).

I was telling my wife that I can't remember the last time any show produced 30 episodes in one season. Guess the fact that it would now cost about $90 million to do so explains why.

I think Season 1 of 30 rock is 30 episodes, but they are half an hour.

Never liked Leno. I think the reason is that I will always associate him with Doritos commercials.

That's cool - I didn't realize any NBC show had produced that many episodes. Always seems like they are in reruns. Remember the whole summer campaign a few years back, "If you didn't see it the first time, It's New to You."

Certainly it will be cheaper to put Leno on primetime, but doing this also keeps him from jumping to ABC or Fox, where they feared he might kick O'Brien's ass.

NBC knows *********** up when Carson retired; yeah Leno's been No. 1 in his time slot for several years now, but losing Letterman (who Carson hand-picked as his successor) to CBS cut the late night audience in half, costing NBC millions in ad revenue.

When they announced quite awhile ago that O'Brien would take over The Tonight Show in '09 "” reportedly without consulting with Leno or his people "” they opened themselves up to a potential repeat. Moving Jay into their primetime schedule might be a serendipitous stroke of genius for the Peacock network.

I never liked Leno either...though, I don't have an excuse as cool as hating his Dorito commercials.
