Update: So I have shopped a great deal around my area of northern california from valleyfair mall to greatmall, (with macy's, nordtrom, 5th, neiman marcus) with the banana republic, brooks brothers, hugo boss, ralph lauren, CK, nautica, Ike Behar, etc. etc. to a bunch of marshalls/ross stores and the only thing i felt safe to buy was a pair of grey banana republic slacks for $40. ...... which i bought cuz they were on sale and seemed to fit ok but i really have no idea how slacks compare to one another......... other than that, i am so confused over which brands are considered quality or at least "better than average" and aren't hundreds of dollars to buy. so please, I really need to get my wardrobe together ASAP so can anyone help recommend where to shop or what may be similar to what i like? I really would like 3-5 straight collar slim fit shirts (a couple of nice blues, a yellow and a green perhaps) which only seem to be available from generic brands like alfani, neiman marcus, donald trump, etc. 3 - 5 slacks (grey, black, white, and 2 others) 2 nice pairs of comfortable shoes that I can walk around in all day on hard surfaces and still allow my feet to breathe and not ache. all help is appreciated, thanks and just to giv eyou some idea of what i like, i could see myself wearing a suit like this by chorse123 http://img23.imagevenue.com/view.php..._122_979lo.JPG and I could see myself wearing that minus the jacket at work. i also liked "socal2nyc"'s outfit he posted yesterday but the shirt i feel is to strong to be worn without the jacket

Get the slim-fit straight collar shirts at H&M - if you live near a bigger store that carries the full range of shirts and suits. The fit is quite good, and I like the shape of their collars and cuffs. They should have a decent selection of solids, in addition to some neat patterns.

You might also be able to get some wool or cotton slacks there, but their pants never fit me personally. I see Polo RL slacks at Marshalls once in a while, and if you can get them at discount they are a good deal - especially the Made in Italy ones.
