I just watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi and it was excellent. Really good look at the Japanese work ethic and the beauty and simplicity of sushi.

i just watched that as well. it was good, but i could've done without so many scenes of making sushi set to classic music. we get it, it's conducting a symphony, etc

I got the feeling that a lot of the nuances they described may be a little bit exaggerated. But as a piece of art I enjoyed the film, just not sure I buy the premise.

One of the best documentaries I have ever seen:
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
A must see.

I'm glad you found it and enjoyed it.

I think it was the combination of music and cinematography that put it over the top. I'm in McLean as well, I saw it at Landmark E-street..great cinema!

Keep the recommendations coming.

Oh, yes!!! This was recommended to me by the Netflix brain and I am eternally grateful. Starkey, as one of the most captivating speakers, could make anything sound interesting. The episode about William the Conqueror started with Starkey at the beaches of Normandy and reads to you the writing on the memorial to the British who fought there, and then goes on to explain how William the Conqueror's reign impacted the English so much that he is mentioned on that memorial almost a thousand years later.

Gentleman, I present to you, the incomparable Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

(source- http://www.maritimequest.com/side_wheel/great_eastern_1858/great_eastern_page_1.htm )

Long before TITANIC was conceived, Brunel, an engineer, designed (among other things) the largest ship of his time.
Here he is seen striking a pose against the drag chains of his 'Great ship' the Great Eastern.
If you have an hour to learn more, here is an excellent documentary on both Brunel and the Great Eastern.

BBC did a 3 part series called "The men that made us fat"

Real eye opener. From supersizing, to food engineering to discounting or bundling thru 'value meals', we are basically being intentionally addicted to trash food. It also explains the history of high fructose corn syrup.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01jxzv8

The most poignant moment for me was seeing one of those 64 oz big gulp soda containers and learning that there are 50, yes 50 teaspoons of sugar in just one drink.

They are basically killing us.

I read a ****** "beach fiction" novel which had him as a major character. Reasonably entertaining nevertheless. As such, I will look into this.
