It kind of depends how easily you pick up the language. For basic comprehension probably no fewer than 3 (at the absolute minimum) but more than likely 4 (you only learn past tense in your second semester).

Like really understand or know what they're talking about? I'd say a few years a minimum but then learning French as an adult is like learning Chinese, only the most masochistic individuals attempt it.

Pick up Italian and listen movies like Milano calibro 9 instead, it'll be easier.

If you combined it with some time living in a french speaking place or at least regularly using it with native speakers then it would probably help tremendiously.

The Sheltering Sky is really quite great too. I had typhoid a few years ago and the Malkovich's portrayal of the illness is really phenominal. I understand it's not as good if you've read the book, which I haven't.

Di Leo's whole filmography is underappreciated.

I dont know who wrote the script for True Grit but I have always thought the writing for that movie was outstanding.

Duvall: What are your intentions?

Wayne: I intend to kill you or bring you back to fort wayne and see you hanged at judge Parkers
convenience.

Duvall: I call that bold talk for a one eyed fat man.

Oh really? I thought all the Romance languages were about the same difficulty.

Really good choices by everyone else though. I'll have to check out that proto-Twin Peaks flick.

I nominate Redbelt. I have no idea why it wasn't better received critically or popularly.

I'm not Neo, but clearly you don't like that movie haha.

Anyway, definitely +1 on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, own it and have watched it several times.

And a few others:

King of California - Absolutely great movie that hardly anyone (around here anyway) has heard of. Yes, it's a good film even if you disagree with my The Last Kiss pick

Runaway Jury - A bit more known, but nonetheless a great movie in my opinion.
